The Purpose of Dyno Tuning

One of the services we offer here at Horsepower Inc. is dyno tuning.  Eric Henderson is our certified DynoJet tuner, and is very good at what he does.  Eric tunes anything from motorcycles, choppers (as long as they fit on the dyno), sport bikes, and even the occasional ATV or UTV.  We have been asked to tune scooters, snowmobiles, and even street vehicles in the past, but we try to steer away from anything that isn’t strictly a performance tune.  Plus Eric’s time is also valuable to our machining department as he is the head production manager.

A dyno tune is typically needed after installing aftermarket pipes, air cleaners, cams, or other performance upgrades, or if you are experiencing any “popping or banging.”  Most motorcycles do not have wide band 02 censors for auto tuning, therefore writing a custom map is required.  Many people also don’t know that the atmosphere in which you live, i.e., mountains, high elevations, temperatures, etc. make a difference in the type of tune you need.

Eric will start off each tune with what’s called a diagnostic.  A diagnostic is a quick pull on the dyno that will evaluate the air and fuel ratio and will show the max horsepower and torque as the bike is.  This typically takes about 30 minutes, and we invite customers to stand in on the diagnostic so they can also see the evaluation of where they are before a tune.  Sometimes Eric will find a customer doesn’t need a full tune, and if they do need the full tune, the cost of the diagnostic goes into the price of the tune.

A person will typically experience a smoother running bike, better throttle response, and is certain circumstance better fuel mileage.  Each motorcycle tuned at Horsepower Inc. by Eric is tuned like it is one of our own bikes, with great detail to the customer’s bike and personal riding style.  When performance counts, Horsepower Inc. should be your only choice.
