Be Funny

While this is the most obvious tip of them all, it is still very important. Being funny to your close friends and family isn't the same as being funny to everyone, but it is a great place to start if you're hoping to one day make a bunch of strangers laugh on cue. You're going to have to make as many random people laugh as possible before you can consider yourself ready for the big stage. 

Just Do It

Following up on the point above, the easiest way to know if strangers are going to make you laugh is to get on stage and give comedy a try. The response you get from the audience is going to be instant feedback on what you're doing right and what you need to improve. To help you start, you don't have to come up with your own jokes. You can locate many good jokes from the internet and try them out. Try to look for ones that not many people know, however, as you might get heckled for passing off unoriginal material as your own. In fact, while internet jokes are a good place to start, you should work hard to come up with original content as you go on with your career.

Trying out the stage is a great way to know if comedy is for you. If it's not, you'll know it right off the bat. It will be a terrible experience you won't want to relive. If it is, then it just might make you come alive, and you'll be able to think of nothing else from that moment on. Many local comedy clubs and even some bars have amateur nights that allow people like you to get some valuable stage time.

Don't Fear Hecklers

Hecklers will always be there, so don't let them get on your nerves. They are usually very drunk audience members that are jealous of the comedian on stage. Tell them to shut up and keep going with your act.

Make Time for Plenty of Practice

Nothing can substitute practice. For you to be a funny comedian who's quick on their feet, you're going to have to do lots of practice. It's like a muscle you exercise to grow. The best practice is to go on stage as many times as you can. Take the feedback from the audience and keep improving based off of that. It's a strong feedback loop that can take you to great heights if applied well.

Learn From Others

If you want to grow as a comedian, then you should learn as much as you can from other comedians. Watch how they handle the toughest of audiences and how they come up with their material. Read their books, listen to their interviews, take them out for coffee and talk to them. You would be surprised at the value you could get out of that single coffee meeting.
