Don’t Sacrifice Personal Fulfillment for Financial Success: Start Your Own Business and Have Both

If you are feeling bogged down or uninspired at your present job, it may be time to think about making a change. One option to consider is turning an existing passion or practice into a lucrative business. Ask yourself whether there is something you are already committed to, something into which you are already investing time and energy, simply because you find it fulfilling. Now, what if you could monetize it? Here are some tips for turning your passion into a career.

Do a little soul-searching.

Before taking the leap into starting your own business, give yourself time to sit with the idea. It can be tempting, at the end of a hard day, to think about how fun it would be to make money off an enjoyable hobby. But will your hobby still be enjoyable if it becomes a job, especially if you’re doing it every day? To make a living from what you love, be sure that you really love it, and are willing to stick with it through good times and bad. If you can visualize yourself pursuing your interest day in and day out, working hard to excel, and still loving it—then, go on to the next step.

Do your research.

While there are many ways to monetize a personal pursuit, it’s important to know the market and understand your options. So, for instance, if you are passionate about personal fitness, you may want to consider opening a gym or creating a business as a personal trainer, but before you do that, know what resources and training you may need. It’s essential that you know what kind of competition you might face, and whether your area has sufficient demand for your product or service. Get a clear picture in your mind of what you have to offer that will specifically draw in customers, and what sets you apart from the competition.

Invest in any needed training.

Unfortunately, it’s usually not enough for you simply to be dedicated about something, or talented at it. You need to be able to market what you create or offer as exceptional, so that others who are similarly dedicated will seek you out as an expert in the field. This may mean taking extra classes or pursuing a certification or even a degree. If you are skilled at tech, for example, you may want to achieve an online degree in Internet Technology, which could prepare you to start a business in data analytics or cyber security. If you are a talented chef or baker, consider a degree in culinary arts as preparation to start your own restaurant or catering venue. Other useful degrees preparatory to launching a business include graphic design and marketing.

Create a business plan.

A successful business can’t be made to appear out of nothing. You need to craft a plan to build it from the ground up. Every good business plan will include an executive summary, a marketing plan, a management structure, and a financial plan. You will also need to consider any legal hoops that you’ll be obliged to jump through. This could include permits, forming an LLC, and protecting your property—whether real or intellectual.

Doing something that you love is rewarding even when it’s just for fun. But think how much more rewarding it will be when it starts paying off financially as well as in terms of personal fulfilment!
