Digital marketing is a way of marketing that utilizes all things electronic—including television, radio, cellphones and of course, the Internet. The Internet is by far the biggest means of digital marketing today, since almost everyone is online.

Digital marketing via the Internet is all about utilizing social media to grow your business.

Creating a website, blog, Facebook account, Twitter account and LinkedIn profile are just some of the ways you can get your business in front on millions of potential customers.

Better yet, most of social media is free, so you really have nothing to lose by at least giving it a try.

We mentioned the most common form of digital marketing which is social media.

Email marketing -  This is using email to reach thousands of potential customers. You can ask customers to give you their email address and send everyone on your list e-newsletters informing them of sales, upcoming promotions and new products.

Search engine optimization -  Search engine optimization—or SEO—is what gets your business to the top of the page on Google, for example. This can be hard to do on your own, so some companies opt to hire the experts for this particular task.

Online advertising -  This includes pay-per-click and affiliate marketing strategies. Basically, you place your ad on other websites in order to gain traffic to your business. Like SEO, some companies hire other businesses to do this for them since it does require a bit of time and knowledge.

Is digital marketing worth it?

If you wish to grow your business, or even just want to maintain your business, digital marketing is a must.

You don’t have to go as far as hiring other companies to help you with this, but you do need to engage in social media at the very least. Build a website that’s user-friendly and easy to navigate, start a free blog to write about updates and changes within your business, connect with customers via Twitter and Facebook, and send out e-newsletters on a monthly basis.

Reasons digital marketing is worth it include:

Connection -  You’re connecting with customers in real-time and able to promote new products instantaneously.

Feedback -  Most likely, you’re constantly looking for ways to improve your business. What better way than to hear directly from the customers about what they want? Digital marketing means you'll receive immediate feedback which allows you to change your business for the better.

Cost -  Most digital marketing is free. You owe it to yourself and your business to give it a try.

Measurable - You can measure the results and effectiveness of digital marketing on your company. Since everything’s digital, you can see if customers prefer Facebook to your personal blog, Twitter to your website and everything in between. You can measure your results and see what works and what doesn’t for your business, which is priceless.

Not only is digital marketing more than worth it, it’s extremely important to the overall success of your business.

Technology is only growing and advancing, and by avoiding it you are simply choosing to not grow and change with the times.

Digital marketing isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so jump on the bandwagon as soon as possible to stay one step ahead of your competitor.
