How Moving Your Company Could Benefit Your Business

Moving your company can be extremely costly. The transportation of equipment alone can cost a small fortune - think of all the computers, desks and files your business has. It can be total chaos the first few weeks as everyone gets adjusted. Depending on how far away the move is, some employees might choose not to stay with the company. But in the end, it can definitely be worth it.

Closer to Industry Ecosystem

One of the primary reasons businesses move is to be closer to the industry ecosystem. This is especially true for certain industries, such as internet companies and software. For them, being in a place like Silicon Valley or New York City allows easy access to the offices of major venture capital firms. Talent is often specialized and hard to hire; in these areas workers with the needed skills are abundant. Big cities also tend to have a lot of customers. Even non-tech companies can benefit from this way of thinking. So if your business is based in the boondocks, consider moving. If you need storage while in the process of moving you can use companies like Meyers Transport Ltd., one of the many Ontario trucking companies.

Cheaper Real Estate

Real estate is one of the biggest expenses for any business. It might make sense to move if you can save a good deal of money. Sometimes this might involve moving to a less desirable area (such as from the city to a suburb). But often you can find a great deal and still stay in the same area. If you’ve renewed your lease a couple times, your landlord might not think you’re willing to move and offer you a mediocre deal.

Better Amenities

Amenities are not always equal. Being closer to public transportation is huge thing. Having a bus or subway stop right around the corner is a significant benefit, especially when it gets rainy or cold. Depending on the area, parking is likewise important. Restaurants and shopping are a nice plus, although they are not usually deal breakers.

Size Requirements

Working in an office that is overcrowded with people is unpleasant. Likewise, you’re wasting money if a significant part of your office is unfilled. The size of your real estate should correspond to your needs. If you’ve going through a hiring spurt or made a downsizing shift, it might make sense to explore an office move.

Office moves can be chaotic, but can pay off big time. There are many things to consider, including how close you are to your industry ecosystem, the price, the level of amenities and how if your company is growing or shrinking. Considering all the costs and benefits is important to making a decision.
