A Workplace Charging Scheme Can Push the Adoption of Electric Vehicles

In the UK, 33 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions come from the transport sector. The government is trying to address the climate crisis; therefore, UK residents will see more electric vehicles (EVs) on the road. The government says that electric cars provide the lowest cost of reaching the UK's goal of zero emissions by 2050.

But for UK citizens to adopt EVs, charging infrastructures need widespread expansion. The plan requires coordinated planning, as some locations have enough space for the installation of charging points while thickly populated cities and urban areas may not have space. In London, for example, most of the cars are parked on the streets, so installing home chargers is not an option. They either have to rely on public charging stations or workplace chargers.

The business sector to take up the challenge

It seems that the business sector will be the main driving force to push the EVs into mainstream use. Taking up the challenge of creating the infrastructure for charging points presents many advantages to business owners.

  • It will encourage employees to have electric cars. The prediction is that by 2030, ownership of EVs in the UK will be about 10.6 million. Although the number of employees driving EVs is increasing, only about a quarter of them can access EV charging in their place of work. Allowing a professional charging point installer like Power-EV.co.uk to provide you with the right EV charging outlets, ensures that you can attract talent to join your company, increase employee retention, and boost employee loyalty.
  • It will improve corporate sustainability, which is a priority for the owners, workers and consumers. The success of the company depends on its viability. Consumers pushed brands to go green in the past. Today, employees are the driving force. Most of them are more than willing to stay with sustainable companies whose values align with their own.
  • EV charging is a better incentive for workers. In the past non-cash incentives were the trend, where employers provided entertainment facilities and lounge areas to their employees. Today, a more effective and affordable motivation is workplace EV charging. It offers considerable savings on energy costs. Moreover, the government grants and subsidies lower the cost of infrastructure development.
  • EV charging provides employees with the impetus to drive an electric vehicle. Since they know where they can charge their car, more employees are likely to purchase an EV. Furthermore, the workplace incentive gives them additional budget for their car purchase.
  • You help minimise pollution. We all know that electric vehicles do not emit poisonous gases into the environment. Encouraging more employees to drive EVs will lower the air pollution level, making the air safer to breathe, and helping people become healthier.

The UK is one of the signatories of the Paris Agreement of 2015. One of its main projects to fight climate change is the plan to have zero emissions by 2050. Switching to electric cars, with businesses providing more charging point is the country's way to achieve that goal.
